Bates Motel

An unusual grey day in LA

Spotted a pretty church that we passed by

Days before I headed off to LA back in May, I scrolled through Instagram and saw Jenn Im posting a picture of herself at an art installation called the 'Bates Motel'. I immediately asked my sister where it was located in LA (she goes to Uni there) and basically asked her to come with me when I'm there.
LA was surprisingly gloomy when we headed out to the Bates Motel which was surprising because the weather there is almost the same as Jakarta. But I guess because it was close to June gloom, the clouds were hovering over us a lot more than usual. We had to pass by a few sketchy streets on the way, but all is well because when we finally (took a while for us to find the installation) arrived at the motel, it was worth the wait!

[Credits to my dad]
There a few people around getting their pictures taken, but this time I didn't feel awkward/embarrassed when my mom took pictures of me, because other people were too, so why should I be embarrassed, you know? It was close to sunset, so we had to hurry and get our pictures taken quickly. Plus, the wind was blowing all over my face, so there's that.

Ghostly

The name of the art installation itself sounds cool. But because I watch the show (also called 'Bates Motel') the place is 100x more interesting for me. I've never seen an art installation before, but this one was satisfying. Seeing it on Instagram was cool, but to see it in real life left my jaw dropping for a couple minutes the first time I saw it.
Since I was so interested with the installation, I googled about it and found very cool facts about the motel:
  • The artist who created the installation is Vincent Lamoroux (French, obviously.)
  • Named after Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho', LA residents know that the motel has been in a state of disrepair for years.
  • The motel was about to be demolished by the city back in 2009, but was bought by a team of developers, turning it into mixed-use space.
What I'm wearing: Topshop top (I got this last year), Forever 21 coat [similar here], Topshop Petite Jamie Jeans, Vince Camuto Bag (I got this last year).

I froze up when my mom told me to pose, so I told her to take candid pictures of me instead. And I was so happy that the results turned out good! We didn't stay for too long because it was getting colder by the minute, and I was hangry!

Such an amazing art installation isn't it? I bet as you read this, you've probably seen at least one person post a picture of them in this installation. But because the whole white theme is made out of paint, the installation might run down soon because it doesn't last permanently. I just checked out the place on Instagram, and the installation is still going strong! So be sure to check it out before it disappears (not literally...)!

Much love, Ashley xxx

  1. That white scenery is so photogenic. I still feel awkward as well when I get my picture taken for my outfit posts. It helps when you think that others do it too, haha. I love your blog btw, and the pictures you take! Will visit again! :)
