What I Did For: Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year. The day I've been looking toward to eversince the year started. If you asked me a year, or two years ago about this event, I would probably roll my eyes and deny. I'm probably gonna tell you that 'I don't celebrate Chinese New Year'. I'm so ashamed to have acted that way and said things that would actually offend others, but suffice to say, I changed. I became to embrace my race late last year. It grew even further when I watched Ip Man with my family. Sitting there and watching how strong Master Ip was, and how quickly he defended the Chinese people of Hong Kong, I felt a deep respect for him to be able to stand up to so many people who were against them.

Fast forward to the present, and things have changed. There's less racism in the world. And for that, I'm thankful. To see so many Chinese succeed in the world makes me happy. That doesn't mean that I'll be learning Mandarin in the future too. Tried that, totally failed because, gosh! The language is dang complicated with its characters and tones, hahaha.

Ramble aside, here's what I got up to for this year's CNY!

My parents, cousin and I headed out to Hotel Kempinski at Central Jakarta. We were invited to a CNY party held by my dad's relatives, so off we go! Sadly I didn't get quite good pictures from the party. I was a nervous wreck, but good thing I had my cousin by my side, cause otherwise I would be alone at the party, roaming around on my own. The food was great though! I ate Chicken Teriyaki and the tastiest Korean BBQ Ribs. Seriously wished I was gobbling that up right now.

After watching a drama and musical relating to this year's CNY, we headed out and took a picture by the entrance. Very happy that it turned out good!

Then we headed out of the hotel and went to the mall that's connected to the hotel; Grand Indonesia. I then spotted some monkeys dangling around. Super cute! This year's decor in malls on CNY has been amazing.

Then we went to a restaurant called Olivier and bought some (three!) croissants! They were very tasty. Once again, seriously wish I was eating that as I'm writing this blogpost. *sigh*

When I was home, my mom became my 'photographer' for exactly 5-10 minutes. She took a Chinese-y picture of me. With three lanterns behind me, my Chinese dress and an umbrella, I felt like one of those Chinese housewives back in the 50's. Lol.

My dog decided to join me!

So that's what I did for this year's CNY! To those of you who celebrate, I hope you had a much more eventful CNY than I did. Would love to know what you did over in the comment section below! To those who don't celebrate, hope you had a great Monday! Have a great week, everybody. :)

Much love, Ashley xx

  13. I think many of us tend to struggle with our culture and history at some point, especially living here in the states it can be easy to forget traditions or let yourself get away from it; I know I have! It's so wonderful that you reconnected :) Love your dress by the way!
