The One Show You Should Watch on Netflix

Hello, hello! As the temperature slowly starts to go down (or in haste, depends on where you live), hygge comes out in full play. Where I live, it's been raining a whole lot, so what better way to spend your cosy night in with a new series? One that I've been obsessing over for the past two weeks has got to be the Netflix Original Series, The Crown. You must give this a try! There's a lot of angst and swoony moments in it that I'm re-watching the whole series for the second time now. *no joke*

As I'm a big avid fan of period dramas, and anything historical, I bloody loved it. I found out that this 10-episodes series was to be released earlier this year and the first time I came across the title of the series, I thought that it was an adaptation of Kiera Cass' book 'The Crown'. I was wrong, and I'm glad I was wrong. The first series of the show focuses mostly on the Queen and Prince's relationship, her rise to being a Queen and the affair between Princess Margaret and Group Captain Townsend and other subjects that made me gasp and in tears at certain times too!

Claire Foy (the Queen) and Matt Smith (Prince Philip) did a splendid job on playing out the part of the Royal couple. Their relationship portrayed on the show is so raw and potent that I felt as if I was part of the show. The series did a great job on showing us their relationship behind the castles' closed doors. There's a whole lot of swooning, but also heartbreaks at the same time. The monarchs, like any other married couple had strifes. I loved that the show didn't sugarcoat that, as it made the relationship real. I was reminded that despite their lavish lifestyles and high ranks, they're just humans like all of us; getting through life every single day and experiencing good times and at times, bad ones. I've gotta admit, Prince Philip at times was a huge D-bag, in the end, I totally understood why.

The other actors in the show were great as well, but one that I just had to talk about was John Lithgow as Winston Churchill. I knew from the start that Churchill would be a part of the show as he was in office before and after WWII. Lithgow's acting was absolutely brilliant, he managed to made us feel compassionate towards the PM who was in his late 70's when he came back in office. Lithgow also managed to show the intelligence of Churchill so well, and the relationship between his character and the Queen was magnificent. His character was at times scary (he described himself as a monster after all), but also very funny. One of my favorite episodes from this series was the 9th one, a very angsty one but one that also celebrated Churchill's 80th birthday and his wittiness. Was quite shocked too that at the time the PM who had weekly audiences with the monarchs wasn't allowed to sit down. (The rule was created by Elizabeth's great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria!).

There are so many things that I want to list down of all the things I loved in this series (um, Matt Smith's bum, perhaps?). I've been a huge fan of scores as of late, specifically period drama scores because they do the best ones, so it wasn't a surprise that I loved this one. The main theme song was composed by Hans Zimmer (absolute legend) and the remaining scores by Rupert Gregson-Williams. If you realize, at tense/serious scenes in the movie, you could hear the subtle tick-tocks of a clock in the background, making the whole situation more heightened and tense for us audiences.

Everything about this series, and I mean everything was brilliant. From the actors, the score and the cinematography was stunning as well. You could tell the vibe of a scene from its light and shadows. Also just wanted to point out that at times, Matt Smith looks quite a lot like Alexander Skarsgård. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks that?! Anywho, I've been watching loads of interviews between Claire and Matt, and I've gotta say their friendship is so cute! And I just can't get over how radiant and cheerful Claire always looks in interviews, and how stunning she looked in the premiere of the series in Leicester Square. Might even say that I have a #girlcrush on her now.

Like any other series, the last episode left me bereft. So I can't bloody wait for the second one to come out! They've started filming the second series about three weeks ago (before the first series was even aired!) and once again, can't hardly wait to watch it. This series did a good job on showing us all, that despite the lavish lifestyle they've endured their whole lives, nothing about their life is easy. Everything personal thing they want to do in their private lives must be shared to the Cabinet! I would go crazy if I had to do that.

Overall, the series is a five star show for me! So give this a go if you'd like and tell me how you liked it. Would love to know your opinion on it!

P.s, there's a lot of hacking and coughing in this series. Be sure to keep some tissues by your side too!

Much love, Ashley xx
