The Girl on the Train: Book vs Movie

The hype around The Girl on the Train got to me. After endless and endless of ads of its trailer on YouTube, I knew I had to get my hands on the book before watching the movie. I'm not usually the type of gal who reads thriller/suspense books, I'm a romance gal through and through, so I was quite surprised that I liked the book very much! Because the book is told in three perspectives; Rachel, Megan and Anna's, I was pretty apprehensive if I would like it or not. Two POV's gets quite confusing sometimes, but three?! Pleasantly surprised that the author did a good job on doing that.

Many reviews of the book said that it was 'scary' and 'creepy', but I didn't feel that way at all! I mean sure at times my eyes bulge out by how surprised I was to certain scenes, but I wasn't scared. I could sleep well at night, unlike some books that keeps me up all night because I was scared of closing my eyes. *lol*

I just watched the movie last Thursday night, so I'll be giving a review on both the movie and the book. Let's see the verdict on which one I like most shall we?!

The one thing that I didn't like most about the movie was that it was set in New York instead of London. Most people wouldn't be opposed to that, but because I read the book and saw Rachel strolling down from pubs to pubs and going on and off the Tube, it just wasn't the same. I would love to know why they had to change the setting though! I was pretty shocked when I first watched the trailer, because I read the blurb before the trailer was released and remembered it being set in London.

In the book, I can vividly feel how Rachel felt. Very isolated, in dire need of contact with other people and I was flabbergasted that it felt so real. Despite all that, in the beginning I felt no sympathy towards at her at all because she was a drunk and a liar too. It was a big ol' mess with a lot of twists, and took quite a while for the plot to really thicken. When it did though, I was pretty surprised and my mouth was hanging down for quite a while when I found out about her past.

Megan and Anna aren't the main characters I'd like to say, so I didn't really connect to these two as much as I did with Rachel. All three of them are messed up in a way, and intertwined for life. For the first time in forever, I didn't get a book boyfriend out of this book because everyone in this book was just so eerie and so damn complicated to love! That was fine though. It is after all a suspense/thriller book.

Like any books that are adapted into movies, it wasn't perfect and I would say that it could've been better. Scores are my favorite and if the score was much more eerie-like and made my heart gallop, it would've been more thrilling! All the important points that are in the book is put inside the movie, but I find some of them are too dry to bring out any emotion out of me like it did in the book.

Can I just say how amazing Emily Blunt's acting is?! She's bloody brilliant. She scared the hell out of me in the beginning of the movie, so you know how hard she worked for this movie. She was pregnant as well whilst shooting it! Which is mindboggling. The videography is great, it's very dark and misty which just screams 'THRILLER' in capital letters. How the plot gradually thickens, I loved. I knew what the ending was going to be, but none of my cousins or sister knew. So as I heard them gasp when they found what actually happened killed Megan Hipwell, it goes to show how good the movie was. I love how subtle and unpredictable everything was. Because I read the book already, I could see the subtle hints of who killed Megan Hipwell from the beginning.

Which one did I like more, the book or the movie? It's hard to say because I like them both. But I would say that the book was a tad bit better. Which is always the case when books are adapted to the screen. Alas, I loved all the actors playing in the movie and would recommend this movie through and through! I don't think it's everyone's taste, so don't be surprised if you don't like it.

Which one did you like better? The book or the movie?

Much love, Ashley xx

  2. I cannot WAIT to see this movie!! I actually had this book downloaded on my iPad, but I never got around to reading it. I actually totally get what you mean about wishing it was set in London like the book! I feel like the setting gives an entirely different feel to a book, and when it's different in the movie, it doesn't give off that same feel as when you read the book.

  3. when i got the book i was done with it in two days and loved every page and i'm so excited to see the movie. i saw in interview about the different location and paula hawkins said that new york gives it a more glam shell which really draws a harsh contrast to the events happening behind them and i thought that was very smart. i'll probably go and watch it next week and i can't wait.

    1. Oh that's awesome to know! I think you'll like the movie. Ooooh, thanks for the insight! That's nice to know, but I would've preferred if they set it in London because it would've been more eerie-like with their constant grey clouds looming around!

  5. I personally always like more what I've seen/read first: if it was movie I prefer movie, if it was book I prefer book. I guess it's all about the first impression. And the ,,Girl in the train'' I've never read before so I totally have to!

  8. I definitely preferred the book to the film, although I have to agree that Emily Blunt's was incredible - her acting is so on point, and to me that's exactly how I imagined 'Rachel' to be! I thought the end of the film really picked up and the acting was done well!

    1. Yeah me too! She was amazing, and to think that she was pregnant whilst filming is mindboggling to me. So true! I kinda liked the ending of the movie than the book though, which is pretty weird. x

  9. I haven't read the book or seen the movie (yet) but I really do think that usually the books outshine the film adaptions, I feel like you can't beat the original.

  10. I haven't read the book or seen the movie yet. I think I may read the book, but skip out on the movie. The trailer didn't look that great to me, and the reviews have been pretty dismal (unlike the book reviews). I do love Emily Blunt though. Her character in Devil Wears Prada will always be one of my favorites, lol.

I do think I want to go ahead and read the book, but I'm definitely going to go see the movie this weekend, too.
